Yin Yoga is based on the Taoist concept of yin and yang, opposite and complementary principles in nature. Yin is the stable, unmoving, hidden aspect of things; yang is the changing, moving, revealing aspect (in Yoga, Yang Yoga would be hatha, ashtanga, vinyasa, bikram). Yin Yoga is the counterbalance to the practice of Yang Yoga
In Yoga, we are now often do the Yang Yoga : Hatha, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Bikram — practices that develops muscular strength, stamina, and flexibility.
Yin yoga involves postures that are held for longer periods of time than yang yoga. This stretches and strengthens connective tissues that are much deeper than superficial or muscular tissues.
